TyG index is a product of fasting blood sugar (FBS) and triglyceride (TG).
It has been proposed as a numerical expression of insulin resistance (IR). The sensitivity and specificity of TyG index can compete with other markers for IR. Unlike the homeostasis model assessment and quantitative insulin sensitivity check index, insulin is not included in the TyG index. This simplicity has practical outcomes such as better accessibility. The TyG index is significantly associated with future cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, suggesting that insulin resistance plays a promoting role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
