What more can you learn from liver enzymes

The AST ALT ratio calculator is a simple tool that helps assess the health of your liver. A high AST ALT ratio and elevated levels of AST and ALT can indicate liver problems.

When the AST ALT ratio is greater than 1, it may suggest cirrhosis – a liver condition that results in the formation of scar tissue and loss of liver function.

An AST ALT ratio higher than 2, along with elevated AST and ALT enzymes, strongly suggests alcoholic hepatitis – a type of liver inflammation caused by excessive alcohol consumption.

  • The AST/ALT ratio can help differentiate between alcoholic and non-alcoholic hepatitis. A ratio of more than 2, along with elevated AST and ALT enzymes, indicates the presence of alcoholic hepatitis.
  • On the other hand, if the level of ALT is higher than that of AST, it can result in a low AST ALT ratio, which can be caused by nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, drug-induced liver damage, viral hepatitis, hemochromatosis, autoimmune hepatitis, breakdown of red blood cells, and muscle or thyroid gland diseases.
