NAFLD score formula

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common causes of chronic liver disease.

NAFLD Fibrosis Score It can reduce the need for liver biopsy by accurately identifying patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease who are likely or unlikely to have advanced fibrosis. This can be achieved through the use of a regression formula that takes into account six different variables: age (in years), BMI (in kg/m2), IFG/diabetes, AST/ALT ratio, platelet count, and albumin levels (in g/dl).

Two cutoff points were chosen to identify the presence (>0.676) and absence (<-1.455) of significant fibrosis.

  • A score of less than -1.455 is a predictor of the absence of significant fibrosis (F0-F2 fibrosis) with a negative predictive value of 93%.
  • A score between -1.455 and 0.675 is an indeterminate score.
  • A score greater than 0.675 predicts the presence of significant fibrosis (F3-F4 fibrosis) with a positive predictive value of 90%.
